History of Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple
The History of Mannarasala is associated with “Lord Pashurama ” who is completely believed to be the creator of Kerala. Legends say that when Pashurama decided to search for forgiveness from the sin of killing the Kshatriyas, he then proceeded towards the holy Rishis. They recommend him to make a gift of a land of his own to the Brahmins. Pashurama pacified Varuna appeared before him and instructed him to throw his parasu, the axe handed to him by Lord Siva, into the sea in order to reclaim his territory. He throws it, raises a piece of land from the water, and delivers it to the Brahmins. This land is thought to be present-day Kerala.
In the beginning Kerala was not fit to live in because of the saltiness..Not even veggies grew there. People began to exit the premises. Parasurama was furious about this. He determined to satisfy Lord Siva, who told him that the goal could only be achieved if the blazing venom of the serpents was spread everywhere, and that the only way to do so was to worship Nagaraja. Parasurama, a yogi, resolved that he would not rest until he saw Kerala emerge as a region of everlasting beauty, full of trees and plants that were healthy in every manner. He set off with his students in quest of a desolate jungle to appease Nagaraja, who was out of reach and beyond everyone’s comprehension. He found a suitable place near the ocean in the southern area of Kerala. Satisfied that he had found a suitable location to realize his long-held desire, the great Rishi built a Thirthasthala for atonement.
Nagaraja, who was pleased with the atonement, appeared before Parasurama, willing to acknowledge his desire. Parasurama lay down at the lotus feet of Nagaraja and prayed to realize his objective.Parasurama lay down at Nagaraja’s lotus feet and prayed to achieve his goal. Nagaraja happily acknowledged his request. Fierce serpents appeared at once, spreading the blazing Kalakuda poison. After dispersing the poison, the land of Kerala was cleaned and made hospitable with greenery. Parasurama then asked the Lord to bless the land with his everlasting presence, which was likewise accepted by the benevolent Nagaraja.
