Uttarkashi has many ashrams and temples. The town’s name shows its similarity to and location north of Kashi (Varanasi). Like Varanasi, Uttarkashi is also located on the banks of the River Ganga.
Shivgufa: Shivgufa is a small temple located between Shivkhori, Barkot, and Uttarkashi. Most devotees visit this temple before continuing their journey to Uttarkashi.
Vishwanath temple – The Vishwanath Temple is one of the oldest Shiva temples in Northern India, rebuilt in 1857 by Maharani Khaneti Devi in an ancient style. Located in the town centre, it features a large iron trident that has been worshiped for ages.
The temple complex also includes shrines to Ganesh, Sakshi Gopal, and Markandeya Rishi. Special prayers and rituals are held in the morning and evening. According to the Skanda Purana, Uttarkashi is called “Saumya Varanasi,” the home of Lord Shiva in Kaliyug and one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
Shakti temple – In front of the Vishwanath temple is the Shakti temple, which has a large trident about 6 meters tall and 90 cm around at the base. The top part looks like it’s made of iron, and the bottom part is made of copper. According to legends, Goddess Durga threw this trident at demons, which is how it got its name. It has been standing here ever since.
Uttarkashi Weather – Summers are usually hot with temperatures between 30-35°C, but the nights are nice. Winters are cold.

Gangotri Temple: The temple was built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century and is located on the right bank of the Bhagirathi River.
Gangotri Weather In summer, temperatures in Gangotri range from 10° to 20° Celsius, so bring light woollens. In winter, it’s very cold and snowy, and pilgrimage centres are closed due to heavy snowfall.

Follow the river to reach Guptkashi, visit the ArdhNarishwar Temple, and check into your hotel. Stay overnight in Guptkashi. This is part of our Chardham Yatra package.
Guptkashi: – Guptkashi means “Hidden Kashi.” According to mythology, when the Pandavas brothers were searching for Shiva, he hid in Guptkashi before moving to Kedarnath, where they finally found him.
There are also practical connections: the priests from Kedarnath live in Guptkashi during winter, and after the Kedarnath temple closes for winter, the image of Kedarnath passes through Guptkashi on its way to Ukhimath, where it stays until spring.
Guptkashi Weather Nice in summer, with temperatures between 25-30 degrees Celsius, but cold in winter.

Day 07: Kedarnath – Guptkashi.
Visit Kedarnath Temple in the morning for prayers, have breakfast, then check out of the hotel. Stay overnight in Guptkashi.
Kedarnath: Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, set in a beautiful location near the Kedarnath mountains. After the Pandavas won the Kurukshetra war, they felt guilty for killing their brothers and sought Lord Shiva’s forgiveness. To avoid them, Shiva transformed into a bull and hid in Kedarnath. When pursued, he sank into the ground, leaving his hump above.
Parts of him appeared in four other places: his arms at Tung Nath, face at Rudra Nath, belly at Mahadeshwar, and hair at Kalpesh war. Together, these five sites are known as Panch Kedar. For More Information Visit Kedarnath.
Kedarnath Weather – Kedarnath is cold most of the year because it’s at a high altitude. Summers are cool, with temperatures around 20°C, so light woolen clothes are needed.
Winters are harsh, dropping to around 0°C and often bringing snow, which makes it a less popular time for tourists.
Day 08: Guptkashi Badrinath (220kms/9-10hrs) Height: 3133 MTS.
After breakfast, drive to Badrinath and check into the hotel upon arrival. Pilgrims can take a bath in Taptkund and visit Badrivishal for the evening Aarti. Brahamakapal is important for performing rituals for ancestors.
There are also interesting places to visit nearby, like Mana, Vyas Gufa, Maatamoorti, Charanpaduka, Bhim Kund, and the Saraswati River’s “Mukh,” all within 3 km of Badrinath. Stay overnight in Badrinath.
Badrinath ji is one of the ‘Ancient Four Dham’s’ and one of the most celebrated pilgrimage spots of the country and is situated at an elevation of 3,133 meters, surrounded on both sides by the Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, with the impressive Neelkanth Peak in the background.
This revered spot was once carpeted with wild berries. That’s how the place got its name “Badri van,” which means “forest of berries.
Taptkund: Natural hot springs by the Alaknanda River are popular for bathing before visiting the Badrinath temple.
Mana Village: It’s the final village in India before Tibet, home to an Indo-Mongolian tribe.
Vasundhara: Vasundhara is a stunning waterfall located 5 km from Badrinath, with 2 km of the route accessible by car up to Mana.
BhimPul: On the other side of Mana village, a huge rock creates a natural bridge over the rushing Saraswati river. It offers an amazing view of the water crashing through the narrow gap underneath and is said to have been placed there by Bhim, the second eldest of the five Pandavas brothers.
Vyas Gufa (cave): Near Mana Village, there’s a rock cave where Ved Vyas is thought to have written the Mahabharata and other texts.
Badrinath Weather: The high will be about 18°C, and the low will be around 8°C. Warm and woollen clothes are hence required for a stay in Badrinath throughout the year. In winter, Badrinath often gets snowfall. Winter is very chilly with an average temperature of 5° Celsius. Because of the harsh weather, this time is usually not open for tourists.
Day 09: Badrinath, Joshimath, and Rudraprayag are 160 km away and take about 7 hours to drive one way. The elevation is 895 meters.
After breakfast, drive to Rudraprayag via Joshimath. Visit Narsingh Temple in Joshimath, then head back to Rudraprayag. Check into the hotel upon arrival and stay overnight. This is part of our Chardham Yatra package.
Joshimath is located on the slopes where the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers meet. It’s one of the four ‘Maths’ set up by Adi Shankaracharya and serves as the winter home for Badrinath, where the idol is brought for worship. The town has several temples, with the most important being the Narsingh temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. People believe that as the deity’s left arm deteriorates, it signals the end of the Badrinath valley, and the Gods will move to the nearby Niti Valley at BhavishyaBadri.
Rudraprayag is one of the five confluences of the Alaknanda River, where the Alaknanda meets the Mandakini River. Kedarnath, a sacred town for Hindus, is 86 km away from Rudraprayag.
Rudraprayag Weather – In summer, it’s usually hot with temperatures between 35-40 degrees Celsius. In winter, the days are cool and the nights are cold, ranging from 20 to 5 degrees.
Day 10: Rudraprayag Haridwar (165kms/5-6hr)
After breakfast, drive to Haridwar via Rishikesh. Rishikesh, known as the “place of sages,” is a spiritual town by the Ganga River, surrounded by the Himalayas. It’s named after the sage Raibhya Rishi, who meditated there. In Rishikesh, visit the temples and see Laxman Jhulla and Ram Jhulla before heading to Haridwar. This is part of our Chardham Yatra package.
Rishikesh: Rishikesh, named after Lord Vishnu, is a sacred city for Hindus in northern India, at the base of the Himalayas.
