About:

Omkareshwar temple is dedicated to lord shiva and is a Hindu pilgrimage site. During winter the doli from Kedarnath Temple and madhmaheshwar are brought to this place for worship here for six months. This place is 41km from Rudraprayag. It is one of the famous shiva temples in Uttarakhand and is also famous for mind-blowing views, trekking, and camps. Kedarnath temple is 47km away from ukhimath. This temple is created by Pandavas according to legend. Ukhimath is also a gateway to Madhmaheshwar, Tungnath, and Deoria Tal. The Omkareshwar temple is almost 5000 years old according to the local folklore and is a beauty in itself.

 

History and Mythology:

According to Mythology Usha(Daughter of Banasura) and Aniruddha (grandson of lord Krishna) had married in Omkareshwar temple. Usha represents ushamath, now known as Ukhimath(spelled as okhimath). In  Omkareshear temple King Mandhata has worshipped Lord shiva in one leg for 15 years by this Devotion Lord shiva give his sight as an omkar(sound of om) and blessed him that is why this place is called Omkareshwar temple.

As you all know Uttarakhand is a land of gods and goddesses and Omkareshwar temple is devoted to lord shiva. This temple is famous for its beautiful oak and pine forest and stunning view of the Himalayas Mountains.  The well-known Madmeshwar mela is also held in a year when doli from madmeshwar comes in winter to Omkareshwar temple. The Famous Kedarnath Temple deity in winter is also transfer for 6 month (Nov-Apr) in Omkareshwar temple that means for half a year kedarnath home will be Omkareshwar Temple. Even so, when Kedarnath is closed and still want to have a look at the icon this is the place If you travel in winter.

And the ceremony is held during summer when doli from Omkareshwar go to its respected place Kedarnath and Madmeshwear

It is Nestled in between mountains towards the road to Chopta( be careful there are two Choptas and google takes you to the village which isn’t the destination).

Best time to visit:

You can visit this temple all around the year But People visit this temple in summer as the dham of kedarnath is closed during winter and the deity are brought down to Omkeshwar Temple to worship.
