Tripura Sundari Temple(Matabari) – Udaipur

Tripura Sundari Temple

History of Tripura Sundari Temple

The Tripura Sundari Temple is a Hindu temple better known as Devi Tripureshwari. The temple is located in the ancient city of Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala, Tripura, and can be reached by train and road from Agartala. it is believed to be one of the holiest Hindu shrines in this part of the country. Popularly known as Matabari, the shrine is located on a small mound because the shape of a mound resembles the hump of a turtle (Kurma), and this shape is called Kurmapṛṣṭhākṛti, it’s considered to be the place holiest possible for a Shakti tabernacle, hence the name of Kurma Piṭha. The goddess is served by traditional Brahmin preachers.

The tabernacle is considered one of the 51 Shakti Peethas; Legend has it that then the little cutlet of Sati’s left leg fell off. Here Shakti is worshiped under the name of Tripurasundarī and the accompanying Bhairava is Tripuresh. The main sanctum, a boxy structure with a three-position roof with a zenith, erected by Tripura Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501, is erected in the Bengali EkRatna style.

There are two black gravestone icons of the Goddess analogous but different in size in the sanctum sanctorum of the tabernacle. The largest and most important 5ft altitudinous hero is that of Goddess Tripura Sundari and the lower one, adorably named ChhotoMa (literally, Little Mama) is 2ft altitudinous and is a hero of Goddess Chandi. The myth says that the lowest hero was brought to the battleground by the lords of Tripura.

Every time on the occasion of Diwali, near the tabernacle, a notorious Mela takes place, visited by further than0.2 a million pilgrims.
