According to Hindu mythology, deriving it’s name from the famous Brahmatal lake which is one of the glacial lake of Himalayas beside which Lord Brahma once meditated.The breathtaking view of Snow capped mountains, lush green forests, mesmerizing trails, and terrain of moderate difficulty motivates you to undertake this trek even in the chilling winters of December, January and February. Located at an altitude of about 12,250 ft above sea level in Dewal block, Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.
Brahmatal trek is spread over a distance of about 22 Km which begins from Lohajung (base camp) and ends when we reach the peak and the magnificent Brahmatal lake. A small shrine is located beside this lake which accentuates the beauty of brahmatal lake. On reaching the Brahmatal peak one can experience the serenity of beautiful mountains. The peaks of Mt.Trishul, Mt.Jaropani and Nanda Ghunti are also visible from the peak of brahmatal.
Documents To Carry For Brahmatal Trek
- Medical certificate approved by a registered medical practitioner.
- Proof of identification.
- Few passport-size photographs will be required when applying for a permission pass which you can get from the forest officer at the Lohajung base camp. It’s mandatory as you may be asked for this pass before entering any forest area.
- Self-attestation form indicating your participation as trekking in the remote Himalayas comes with all types of risks.
Best Season To Visit Brahmatal Trek
Winter is the best season to pack up your trekking gears. The lush green forests and trails are all covered with blankets of snow which are really eye-catching. The spiritual bliss that a person feels during the chilling winters rejuvenates one’s soul, which has made it a preferable choice for winter hikers. The maximum temperature during winters is around 5 to 9 ° C which then falls up to -8° C as the day ends.
The spring and summer season has their own significance, the terrain is covered with lush green forests and blossoming rhododendron flowers. The weather is usually clear with the maximum temperature reaching 15°C in spring whereas it can reach up to 22 ° C in summers. And can fall up to 0° to 10 degrees C during summers.
Trekking during the Monsoon season from July to August should be avoided which might lead to injury because of slippery terrains.
Routes for Brahmatal Trek
- REACHING LOHAJUNG VILLAGE-you can reach lohajung (base camp) by reaching Dehradun via flight or by train and then via haridwar /Rishikesh you can reach Lohajung .
- You can also reach Lohajung via Kathgodam which is the nearest railway station.
- After reaching the base camp you have to reach Bekaltal which is around 6 kms away.
- After an overnight stay in tents you will head for Brahmatal lake which will be the endpoint of the Brahmatal Trek.
Fitness For Brahmatal Trek
- Start training yourself atleast a month before you go for trekking.At least 40minutes of brisk walking and cardiovascular exercises will work best as it will train your muscles well and increase your physical strength.
- Trekking in these remote Garhwal region of Himalayas require you to be fit as you won’t be able to get immediate medical attention.Also carry a first aid kit to be on a safer side.
- Carry dry fruits and some eatables which may help you as they are energy boosters.Carrying heavy backpack for hours also is very tiring,so make sure of taking breaks in between.It’s mandatory to carry a fitness certificate as I mentioned above.
