Tapkeshwar is a famous holy temple of Lord Shiv on the bank of the seasonal Asan river near Dehradun. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest temples in Dehradun. It is known for its Shivling. The main shiva linga at the temple is inside a natural cave and is a very popular tourist attraction in the region. The temple of Tapkeshwar Mahadev and the surrounding area is known as Tapkesvar as it was originally named after Tapkeshwar Mahadev.

 

History

 

The Tapkeshwar Mahadeva temple owes its importance to the natural Shiva Linga in the cave. Long ago, the river flowed through the caves and continuous water droplets fell on the Shiv Linga. It has become a place of worship for the local population. esteemed teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas of the Hindu epic Mahabharata written by Veda Vyas. The cave is called Drona Cave from its name. When Dronacharya’s wife Kalyani gave birth to Aswosthama, she didn’t correctly feed him with her milk. As Dronacharya could not afford cow or cow milk, Aswosthama, the clever child prayed to Lord Shiva. Being happy with his praying, Lord Shiva feed him milk dripping from the Shivling in Drona cave.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is very popular as a place of pilgrimage in Dehradun. The beautiful temple of Lord Shiva established between the two hills attracts hundreds of tourists from inside and around Dehradun all year. Travelers from and around Uttarakhand pay visits to Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple for its religious significance and adventurers go there to see the water drops running down the Shiva ling in the Drona cave which is a spectacular sight.  The water that drops down vanishes underground and can be seen a few yards away in the form of a stream. In Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, cool sulfur-water springs where devoted pilgrims take baths before entering the temple.

 

Fair and festival

 

On the day of Shivratri, a big festival is held around the Tapkeshwar temple. People participate in large numbers in the fair held on the occasion of Shivratri and every year they pay homage to the deity. Drona Cave, surrounded by beautiful hills, is usually covered with picnics from Dehradun and neighboring districts.

It is a huge festival that is celebrated every year to enjoy the union of Lord Shiva and his wife, Goddess Parvati. On Shivratri, the temple holds a feast of Bhang ki mithai and Bhang drinks and pilgrims also devote their favorite eatables to Lord Shiva.
