Known as the “Gateway to the Kumao Himalayas”, Tanakpur city is a small relaxed plain area nestled in the famous Champawat district of the beautiful himalayan state of Uttarakhand. Sharing its boundary with Nepal, Tanakpur is located at the banks of the River Sarda. It even holds the title of ‘gateway to the Purnagiri Temple’ which is just 30 kms from here. The city prides itself to be the 1st point in the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage & is well connected to National Highway 9. It is a business town also which is well connected with transport mediums and motorable roads.

History of Tanakpur city:

  • The area between the Kali & Rapti were gifted to British East India Company by the Sangauli Treaty of 1815. Later, it was gifted back to Nepal in exchange of help by Jang Bahadur to suppress Sepoy Mutiny of 1857.
  • In 1920 Sarda Treaty was initiated by Chandra Shamshere.
  • In 1991 India & Nepal signed a Treaty on the Tanakpur Barrage, as a goodwill gesture.

  • By air: Pantnagar airport 98 kms away Nainital. Taxis are available from airport to Tanakpur

Shyamlatal:

Situated in the Sharda Valley at an elevation of 1500 metres, it is 1.5 km scenic natural lake that forms an important part of Tanakpur tourism. Named to denote the color of hindu god lord Krishna, this lake is also famous for some rare roses. Tourists can enjoy boating amidst beautiful surroundings.

 Banbasa Barrage & Range:

Offering spectacular views of the lake formed by it, this barrage is built on the Sharda river. Sprawling acres of park nearby is a perfect spot to enjoy picnics with the family. It is also spotted by an old Dak bungalow which transports the onlookers to memories of the past eras.

Purnagiri Temple:

Just a 3 km trek from Tunya will land you to this beautiful temple of Hindu importance as it is one of the 108 siddhapeeth. Its distance from tanakpur city is 30 kms. This is the very place where according to famous hindu mythology, father of goddess Sati, Daksha Prajapati organised a sacrificial ceremony to which lord shiva was not invited which eventually lead to self-immolation of Sati & the formation of sidha peeths.

Sharda Ghat: Also known as Ma Purnagiri Sharda Ghat, this is the ghat where people bathe before heading for Purnagiri temple as part of a cleansing ritual. Located conveniently near Tanakpur bus stand

Panchmukhi Mahadev Temple: Devoted to Lord Shiva this temple worships the panchmukhi or five faced avatar of shiva. Aarti timings are 7:00 to 7:30 pm

Shri Adhya Shakti Temple/Boom Temple: marked by sandy beaches and river rafting managed under govt. adventure programme.

8 miles: Famous amongst locals its a spot known for seasonal waterfalls
