New Tehri is the newly established city in the Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. The new Tehri was established after the sinking of the old Tehri. New Tehri is 24 km from Old Tehri. And 11 km from Chamba, the famous place of Uttarakhand. The world’s largest dam is located in New Tehri.

History of New Tehri

The city of Old Tehri was located on the major Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers of Uttarakhand. Old Tehri was established by the British government in 1815 as the capital of the Garhwal Empire. Old Tehri was a city spread over an area of 10800 kilometers. According to the census of 1901, the population of Old Tehri was 268885.

There was also the main route of the river Ganges through Old Tehri, which was the main source of worship for the Indian Hindu devotee. One day the entire city of Tehri was submerged due to continuous efforts to expand the area of old Tehri and the dam. In which there was a lot of loss of public money. The new Tehri was formed after the old Tehri was completely submerged.

Some of the survivors of the old Tehri disaster were shifted to New Tehri and some to Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Many people agitated for the construction of the dam again at New Tehri. Chief among them was Sundar La Bahuguna. Sundar Lal Bahuguna along with the agitators tried to protest through the Chipko movement but they failed in this movement. After this the construction of New Tehri became possible and the new Tehri and its dam were established. If we look at today’s time, there is no sign of the old Tehri left.
