Kumbh Mela 2021
Kumbh Mela is also known as Kumbha Mela. It is a Hindu religious festival celebrated four times in the last 12 years. Millions of people around the coming to take the dip in holy water Ganga during this occasion in Uttarakhand. Instead of Haridwar, this fair is also held in Nasik near the bank of the river Godavari Allahabad, on the famous meeting of Ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati river, and Ujjain on the bank of river Shipra. Haridwar is one of the four places where the elixir fell during the war between god and demons, and this is why the land is considered blessed. Bathing in River Ganga is symbolic of gaining immortality during the Kumbh Mela. Kumbh Mela is also a record for hosting one of the largest gatherings in the world. Approximately 10 million people were recorded to have a bath in the river Ganga.
Importance of Kumbh Mela 2021
Kumbh Mela is the backbone of the Uttarakhand economy. This lockdown forced due to the COVID-19 Pandemic has given the hill’s state tourism sector a major bump.
The annual pilgrimage to Char Dham resumed late and with restrictions. The annual Kanwar Yatra could not take place due to the epidemic. Seema Nautiyal, District Tourism Officer, Haridwar, says that now the Kumbh Mela 2021, to be held from January 1 to April 30, is expected to revive those involved in the sector. There are more than 800 hotels and 350 ashrams in Haridwar where preparations are being made to accommodate an average of 1.25 lakh devotees on any given day during Kumbh. The tourism department had previously expected 100 million pilgrims, but restrictions imposed to ensure social unrest would reduce that figure.
