About Kumari Amman Temple

The holy temple is 3000 years ancient and is dedicated to the pure and virgin Goddess Kanya Kumari. There was a mythological story of the goddess Kanya Kumari, The devotion of Devi Kanya Kumari dates back to the ancient period of Kumari Kandam. Kanyakumari is located on the southernmost tip of Tamilnadu.

According to the legend behind the Kumari Amman temple, the demon Banasura had captured all devas and kept them in his cruel captivity. As per the boon, he could be killed only by a virgin girl. Hence, upon Deva’s prayers and pleas, Goddess Parasakthi took the form of Kumari, the virgin girl so as to kill the demon.

History:

Dating back to the 17th century, the practice was institutionalized by a Malla King. The famous Kumari Temple is situated right across the historical Gaddi Baithak Hall at Basantapur in Kathmandu. Kumari Ghar, the house of Living Goddess Kumari, is located on the southern side of the Kathmandu Durbar Square premises.

Kanyakumari Temple is located in the city of Kanyakumari, the southernmost city of India. It is a popular tourist destination and also a holy pilgrimage site since it is believed to be a Shakti-Peeth. It is believed that the shoulder of the Goddess Sati fell on this site and that is why the region has kundalini shakti.

The opening timings of Kanyakumari Temple for darshan are from 4.30 AM to 12.30 PM. It then closes in the afternoon and again opens in the evening from 4 PM to 8 PM.
