History of Nainital, Uttarakhand

The Manas Khand of ancient scripture Skand Purana says that Nainital was traditionally known as Tri-Rishi- Sarovar, where Tri means “three”, Rishi means “Sages” & Sarovar means “lake” and simultaneously this place was known for the name of three Sages i.e. AtriPulastya and Pulaha. These sages were on their way to pilgrimage and arrive to this place for the search of water. Upon finding no water in Nainital they decided to dig a hole at this location and diverted water from Mansarovar Lake in Tibet and thereby Nainital Lake was originated.

Nainital name was derived from Goddess sati, while the other says that when lord Shiva carried the charred body of Goddess Sati her eyes fell down on this holy land and the lake was formed which is known as Nainital(‘Naini’ stands for eyes and ‘Tal’ means lake). It is also consider that The Naini Lake is one of the 64 Shakti Peeths in India
