Kedarnath
Kedarkantha is a beautiful place and a popular winter trek, located in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand at the height of 3800m. in winters, Kedarkantha is covered with snow and at night shines brighter than stars in the sky. This is a place, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The best time to visit beautiful Kedarkantha is from December to April. During this time the whole trek route is enveloped with snow and makes this trek more adventurous.
Kedarnath trek
Kedarkantha, the finest summit trek and most popular winter trek of Uttarakhand. kedarkantha trek is an easy trek and can be done by beginners also. It is a 20 km trek which is covered in 5 days.
Kedarkantha trek starts from Sankari village. The trail takes you through the dense forest of blue pine and then the forest opens up to a gorgeous view of alpine meadows. On the way, you will see stunning Garhwal mountains, which will energize you to watch a more satisfactory view from the summit of Kedarkantha.
From Kedarkantha summit, you can view 13 other peaks like Nanda ghunti, Swargarohini, Kalanag peak, Bandarpunch mountains, Yamunotri range, and Jaonti, Gangotri, Draupadi ka Danda, Jorkanden along with Rupin valley, Harki Dun valley, and many more.
Kedarkantha trek gives some amazing campsite spots like Juda ka Talab, Kedarkantha base, and Hargaon. Base camps offer some 180-degree views of lofty snow-capped ranges like Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, and Kalanag.
History of Kedarkantha
Kedarkantha was supposed to be the site of Kedarnath. It is said that Lord Shiva was wandering in his Bull Avtar, in Kedarkantha. He was hiding from Pandavas but local Dwellers disturbed him. Then he left the Kedarkantha site and moved to the Kedarnath site.
Villagers of Sankari believe that the Trident of Lord Shiva which is at Kedarkantha protects them.
It is also said that once upon a time Lord Shiva was meditating there and a droplet fell from his hair and formed Juda Ka Talab.
How to reach
By road-
- Take a bus to Dehradun from your bus station.
- From Dehradun take a direct bus to Sankari. Which are 10 hours from Dehradun.
- In case you miss your direct bus to Sankari, take a bus to Mori then from Mori take a shared or private cab to Sankari. Or,
- Take a bus to purola then from there take a cab or taxi to reach Sankari.
- Hire your vehicle or drive yourself to Sankari.
By train-
- Take a train from your station to Dehradun railway station.
- From Dehradun railway station, take a cab or any public transport to Dehradun ISBT.
- From there take a bus as instructed above.
By air-
- Jolly grant airport is the nearest airport to Sankari.
- Take a cab from Jolly grant to Sankari.
Kedarkantha trek itinerary
DAY 1- Dehradun to Sankari
- 187 km from Dehradun.
- 6-7 hours
- Drive along the Yamuna river.
- Enjoy the ride surrounded by pine forests.
- After a beautiful ride to Sankari, take a comfortable campsite.
- Overnight stay in Sankari.
DAY 2- Sankari to Juda Ka Talab
- Hike 4 km for an elevation of 2786m.
- 3-4 hours.
- Enjoy the small villages on the way.
- Cross some high-altitude suspension bridges.
- Set up your camp at the lake site.
DAY 3- Juda Ka Talab to Base Camp
- start your 4km trek to Kedarkantha base camp.
- 4-6 hours, at an elevation of 3430m.
- Trek through the snow-lined path.
- On reaching, enjoy the 180-degree view of snow-capped mountains.
- set up your camp there and enjoy your overnight stay under a beautiful sky full of clear stars.
DAY 4- Kedarkantha Base camp to Kedarkantha summit
- start a 6km trek to an elevation of 3800m.
- 6-7 hours.
- Start your trek early in the morning so that you can watch the sunrise from the summit.
- Sun rays from the mountains of Yamunotri and Gangotri and Kinner Kailash ranges will warmly welcome you to the Kedarkantha summit.
- spend some time at Kedarkantha summit.
- Start a descending walk to Base camp.
- Overnight stay in Base camp.
Day 5- Kedarnath base to Sankari
- Descending distance is 6km.
- 6-7 hours.
- Enjoy the local stories shared by your guide.
- Enjoy the view of snow-capped mountains and peaks.
