According to records, In 1857, Maharani Khaneti, Sudarshan Shah’s wife, redeveloped the temple.

  1. The temple has taken the place of the previous sanctuary. It also features a traditional Himalayan architectural style.
  2. Devotees also believe that when Varanasi (Kashi) is submerged, Lord Kashi Vishwanath will be relocated to this location.
  3. According to legend, Lord Vishwanath calls this his home since the second half of the Kalyuga.
  4. Lord Shiva, the God of Death, was said to have guarded Rishi Markandeya from Lord Yama.
  5. The temple contains a meditating image of Sakshi Maharaj and Rishi Markandeya.

 

WHY KASHI VISHWANATH TEMPLE IS IMPORTANT

The temple is important because Lord Shiva is present here in the form of a self-manifested lingam, submerged in relaxation and meditation. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum also has Goddess Parvati and Lord Ganesha.

After truthful service and worship at the Temple, a true devotee of Shiva attains ‘Moksha’ (salvation) and also lives with Shiva in his abode at Mount Kailash, according to beliefs.

Every day, from early morning to the late evening,  Shiv pujas are performed. It is absolute nirvana to listen to hymns being chanted while the royal Abhishek is performed with the ‘Panch Amrut’ ingredients – Milk, Curd, Honey, Sugar, and Ghee!! Before embarking on the Himalayas, the Lord of the Universe and Shaktimata must be seen.

Devotees also believe that Lord Shiva himself tends to blow the salvation mantra into the ears of those who die naturally at the temple.

At  Mahashivratri which is a Hindu festival commemorating Lord Shiva. Every three hours that day, priests wash the Shivalinga with cow’s milk, curd, honey, cow ghee, and water. Devotees decorate the lingam with flowers and perform the Abhishek with milk during this festival.
