This is the legend of Kamakhya Shakti Peeth
Shiva was married to Goddess Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha. Daksha did not like Shiva and kept trying to insult Shiva again and again.
Daksha organized a yagya. He invited all the deities and sages to the yagya, but did not invite Shiva and Sati. When Goddess Sati came to know about this, she agreed to go to her father’s place.
Shiva tried to convince Sati that we should not go to any such program without invitation, but Devi said that no invitation is needed to go to the father’s place.
Shiva wanted to stop Sati, but Sati insisted and went to her father’s place in the Yagya. At the place of Yagya, Daksha Prajapati said derogatory things to Shiva in front of Sati.
Hearing the derogatory words for her husband, Goddess Sati became enraged and ended her body by jumping into the Yagya Kund there. When Shiva came to know about the whole incident, he became angry with Daksha and ordered Veerabhadra to appear and put an end to Daksha.
Shiva picked up the burning body of Goddess Sati and started wandering in the universe in the separation of the Goddess. At that time Lord Vishnu thought that as long as the body of the Goddess remains with Shiva, he will not be able to get away from the delusion of the Goddess. After this Lord Vishnu started cutting the body of the Goddess with his Sudarshan Chakra.
Wherever these pieces of the body of the Goddess had fallen, the Shaktipeeths of the Goddess were established there. In the Kamakhya temple area, the part of the mother goddess had fallen. For this reason, the yoni part of the goddess is worshiped here.
Ambubachi festival is celebrated in Kamakhya temple from around 22nd June to 26th June every year. In relation to this festival, it is believed that during these days the menstrual cycle of the Mother Goddess remains. For this reason the temple is closed on these days.
This place is famous for the actions of Tantra-Mantra
One of the 51 Shaktipeeths of the Goddess, in this temple, the activities of Tantra-Mantra are done a lot. Due to these activities, this temple is world famous. The idols of Goddess Tripurasundari, Matangi and Kamala as well as other goddesses are installed here. There is also a yoni Kund, which is circumambulated. Ambubachi fair is held here every year in the month of Ashadha.
