Kedarnath : Now Horses and Mules will Run on Rotation Basis

During the Kedarnath Yatra, only 4500 to 5000 horses and mules will run per day; this decision was made with the animals’ welfare in mind. Animals will be able to rest now, making movement easier.

The District Magistrate has devised a new plan for the Kedarnath Yatra’s regular resting of horses and mules, as well as making the route accessible on foot. Every day, 4500 to 5000 horses and mules will be rotated along the Gaurikund-Kedarnath route. The district administration formulated this plan after learning of the deaths of 16 horses and mules last week. In addition, the required instructions have been given to the operators and hawkers.

8516 horses and mules took part in the Kedarnath Yatra this year. Horse-mule operators have overworked them to the point where 30 horses and mules perished in three days between May 10 and 16 owing to a lack of rest. With immediate effect, District Magistrate Mayur Dixit has instructed that the horse-mules on the Gaurikund-Kedarnath pedestrian path be operated on a rotation basis.

He has requested that 4500 to 5000 horse-mules be operated per day so that the animals can obtain enough rest. In addition, the horse-mule operator / hawker has been asked to remain with the animal based on ID, so that information about who is running the hawker can be preserved with the animal. The DM stated that it was determined to run under rotation in order to ensure the safety of the passengers and the health of the animals.
