Kaafni Glacier

Kaafni glacier is a long, difficult and a beautiful trek that is in Bageshwar district of kumaun region in Uttrakhand.

About Kaafni Glacier-

 

Kaafni river’s mainly orginates from this Kaafni glacier which then becomes the tributary of Pindar river which then merges into river ganga. Kaafni glacier is in the left side of Pindar valley which is under the Nandakot peak and is on the southeast of Nanda Devi Peak.

Kaafni glacier is considered small as compared to the other well knowed famous big ones but is the centre of attraction for many trekkers around the country or globe.

Flowers like Rhododendrons will make the Kaafni trek unforgettable. Rhododendrons are the multicoloured flowers that can only be found on the high altitude place like Kaafni glacier.

 

Location-

Kaafni glacier comes in Bageshwar district of kumaun region in uttrakhand.

 

Places to Stay around Kaafni Glacier-

There is no place to stay nearby Kaafni glacier. You will find no accommodation there because of higher altitude. You’ll need to camp there and carry your tents with you. But you can find some place to stay in Loharkhet since it is the last motorable stop in route to kaafni glacier.

How To Reach-

Here we will tell you that you the route from   Delhi. Since, Delhi is the closest metro city from dehradun and is the capital of the country. The motorable route from Delhi to Loharkhet, Bageshwar will be shown in each section (Bus/plane/train). After that the trek route will be shown to you separately.

By Air-

If you are coming from Delhi the nearest airport from kaafni glacier is of Dehradun Jolly Grant airport. From there you will need to book/rent a bus or taxi to Bageshwar. From there you’ll need to book another taxi till Loharkhet because Loharkhet is the last motorable stop.

By train-

If you are coming from train then we would suggest you to book your tickets to either Rishikesh railway station or to Dehradun railway station. From there you’ll need to book/rent a bus/taxi to Bageshwar. And then again book/rent a taxi to Loharkhet.

By Bus-

From Delhi either book a bus/taxi to Haldwani or to Dehradun. Then from Haldwani or Dehradun book/rent a bus again to Bageshwar.

And then from bageshwar book a taxi again till Loharkhet.

Route from Bageshwar to Loharkhet-

 

Bageshwar-Bharadi-Saung-Loharkhet.

 

Trek route-

Loharkhe–> Khati village –> Phukria –> Zero point –> Dwali –> Kafni

Things to Carry-

Food- since there is no accommodation there so you will need to carry your own food. You can carry your own food with you in packets also. vegetables and fruits also.

Tent-

Since there are no accommodations there so you will need to carry your own tent with you. It is a must carry thing, you just need to have it.

Water bottles-

Like tents you should have watter bottles and in some quantity. Depends on how many people are on the trek with you.

Portable stove and gas-

Portable stove and gas cans will help you to make food there in kaafni glacier trek. It will be used to boil water too in case the temperature is too low.

 

Sleeping Bags (warm sleeping bags)-

Inside the tent in freezing cold weather warm sleeping bags becomes the must carry things to carry with you. Just imagine scenario, you have gone to trek near the glacier can you sleep there in freezing cold temperature without your warm sleeping bags? No, you cannot. So do carry warm sleeping bags with you.

 

 

Travel tip-

 

  • Take windproof heavy jackets with you since it will be freezing cold there.
  • Basic medicine like Paracetamol are must, because of high altitude you may have headaches.
  • You should have a good pair of trekking shoes with you since the trek will be steep and difficult.
  • Some packets of ORS to prevent you from dehydration.
  • You can carry some packets of glucose or electrodes with you. It will help you massively in terms of energy during trek.
  • Take some chocolates with you too. In case of lack of food chocolates are considered as the good supplement for much needed energy.
  • Trekking pants that should be water proof.
  • A good pair of gloves to prevent your hands from cold.
  • Moisturizer or lip balm to prevent you skin and lips.
  • Quick dry towel.
  • Trekking stick (mandatory).
