The famous temple of Almora ‘Chitai Devta Mandir’ is devoted to a Gollu or Goljyu Devata an avatar of Lord Mahadev Shiv in the form of Gaur Bhairav. There are so many temples of Golu Devta in Almora but Chitai Golu Devta Mandir is one of the divine temples among all these temples which are there. From Almora Main city, it is just 9 km away situated in Bhowali, next to the sink school, Ghorakhal located in the beautiful Kamoun Himalayan region. There is a reputed thing connected with this temple, it is believed that it makes every wish come true but worshippers should ask in a proper conscience way.

Golu devta travels so far distance on his horse to meet the people of his kingdom. Golu darbar used to take place by golu dev to hear the problem of the people in every possible way. Golu devta is known as the god of justice. Golu Devta offered with a white cloth with Pigms and white shaal. Devote offers Gee, Milk, Curd, Halwa, Poori, Pokuri to golu devta some devote also offers bells and sacrifices of the animal after the fulfillment of their wishes. Only the male black goat is an offer for Bali. You can also see lots of bells in the temple area, everyday temples received lots of petitions in a written form which is usually written by the devotes.

The most famous story about Golu devta is that there was a local king. He was going in the forest for hunting. During Hunting he become thirsty so sent his servant in search of water, the servant disturbed a woman. The woman was in deep mediation, she become so much angry, in anger she taunted the king that he could not separate two fighting bulls and proceeded to do Herself. The king become so much impressed by the lady so he decided to marry that beautiful lady. After their marriage the queen gives birth to a beautiful son, the other queens become so much jealous of her. Other queens have decided to place a stone on the behalf of the child and then locked the child in a cage and throw the cage into the river. The child was so much lucky that he survived also he was brought up by the fisherman. When the boy grow up he took a wooden horse with him placed that horse in the river and on being questioned by the queen, he replied that if a women give birth to a stone if it’s true my wooden horse can also drink water from the river. When the king heard about this whole incident he decided to punish the guilty queen and crowned the boy which is going to be known as Golu devta.
