History of Champawat Uttarakhand

The former name of champawat was champawati because the location of this town on the banks of champawati steam. Champawat was former capital of the Chand Dynasty of Kumaon. And there is a temple called BALESHWAR TEMPLE was built in the 12th century by the Chand dynasty rulers.

By AIR: Naini Saini Pithoraghar Airport is the nearest airport which is in the Pithoraghar district is located 80 km away and the estimated timing is 2 hour 27 minutes by four wheeler.

By train: The nearest railway station is Tanakpur railway station which is 72.5 km approximately 1 hour 49 minutes ride by a four-wheeler for champawat.

By Bus: Tanakpur roadways bus station is the nearest bus station for reaching out champawat.

  • Baleshwar temple: Baleshwar temple is a masterpiece of stone carving art in the ancient time the temple was built by the Chand dynasty between the 10th and 12th century AD and the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Baleshwar).
  • Kranteswar mahadev temple: kranteswar Mahadev temple located 6 km away from champawat and as its name suggest it is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is believed that the avatar of Lord Vishnu KURMAVATAR was born here.
  • Banasur ka Kila: The fort was made in the medieval period and situated at 1859 m from the sea level and it is believed that Lord Krishna killed a monster named BANASUR here at this place.
  • Ek Hathiyar ka Naula: this structure is another marvellous example of stone carving art located 5km away from champawat and this structure made by a one-handed machinist (mistri) Jagannath with help of his daughter Kasturi.
  • Mayawati Ashram: Mayawati Ashram is 5 km away from lohaghat located at 1945m above sea level with the staying facilities is a popular destination for tourist.
  • Patal Rudreshwar: this 40m long and 18 m wide cave is believed that Lord shiva did meditation here and it was discovered in 1993 by a villager.
  • Tadkeswar temple: it is believed that the demon Tadkeswar prayed and received immortality here from Lord shiva.
