History
History of Jageshwar temples according to the ASI, These temples are approximate to be 2500years old temples in India and belong to the pre-medieval and post-Gupta era. This temple complex was built and designed by the Katyuri Dynasty in the 8th to 13th century later on managed by Chand Dynasty. The temples were reconstructed during the rule of Katyuri King Shalivahandev.
It is said that Adi Shankaracharya visited Jageshwar Temple and reconstruct and re-established some temples before leaving for Kedarnath. It is also said that sati, the act of self–sacrifice, may have been the practice here. After which Shiva lies here and meditate. Shiva isolated himself and that brought darkness to the earth. To solve this problem, this is how the worship of Lingha or shivlingha tradition begins. The temples are surrounded by stone sculptures of various gods. The pilgrimage to Jageshwar was considered the 5th most important as religious as the famous Chardham yatra.
In the temple complex the main temple at ‘Jageshwar Mahadev Dham’ is dedicated to ‘BAL Jageshwar’, or the kid Shiva. There is also a temple addressed to Vridh Jageshwar or elderly Shiva. According to folks, Lord Shiva came to meditate here, and when the women of the village came to know of this, she immediately went to have his darshan. When her husband heard of this, he came to see who this sadhu is who has captivated his wife. Seeing the situation, Shiva took the form of a kid, which is why he is still idolizing in his child form Or BAL Jageshwar in the temple.
