About Kedarnath

Kedarnath temple is one of the oldest sacred Hindu temple situated near the Mandakini river in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand. Located on the Garhwal Himalayan range, it is the highest among the twelve jyotirlings of Lord Shiva. The total distance to cover from Pathankot to Kedarnath by road is 680 km. If you are planning to travel by car, you can start your journey from Pathankot -> Ludhiyana -> Chandigarh -> Haridwar -> Rishikesh -> Devprayag -> Srinagar -> Rudraprayag -> Agustyamuni -> Guptkashi -> Sonprayag -> Gaurikund -> Kedarnath.

Pathankot to Kedarnath via Bus

There is no bus service direct from Pathankot to Kedarnath. So if you are planning to travel by bus, you need to reach Dehradun first. Once you reach Dehradun, you can take a bus to reach Sonprayag. Buses and taxis are easily available to reach Gaurikund, which is only 5 km from there. The ride will probably take probably 15-20 minutes. This is the last road head from the temple.
The trek route to temple, which is 16 km, starts from Gaurikund. Generally, the trekking takes 6 to 8 hours, but is also depends on how the weather condition is and how your physical health is.

Since, there is no flight direct from Pathankot to reach Dehradun. So, you have to take a flight to reach New Delhi first. After you reach New Delhi, you can easily take a flight to reach Dehradun. Take a taxi or bus to reach Sonprayag from Dehradun, then take another taxi to reach Gaurikund. After that, the trekking route starts to the temple.

Weather Conditions in Kedarnath Area

The pilgrimage season in Kedarnath is during the Chardham yatra, means from the month of late April to November. The best time to visit is from May to June or September to November. Despite the cold weather condition, the place is much busy and crowded during this period. During summer, the pleasant weather is ideal for visit. During monsoon, it becomes difficult to visit due to hilly monsoon conditions. It is not recommended to travel during monsoon, since the region is prone to floods and landslides. During winter, the cold is at extreme high level leads to regular occurrence of heavy snowfall.

Tips while travelling or trekking to Kedarnath temple

  1. Being a hilly area, network problem is common in Kedarnath. Only Reliance Jio and BSNL sim works there.
  2. If you are planning to travel in summer season, don’t forget to carry some light weight winter wear.
  3. Carry extra batteries, raincoat, medical kit, your aadhar card or any other ID.
  4. It is not recommended to travel during monsoon, you can visit from May to June or September to November.
  5. Advance booking of hotel is a must thing if you are planning to visit.
  6. You can go for the option of pony or helicopter service if you are not able to walk this much distance from Gaurikund to the temple.
  7. Don’t forget to carry cash. Online payment won’t work in every case. Also the region has network issue, which makes it more difficult.
