koteshwar mahadev temple

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is located in a town about 3kms from district Rudraprayag in Uttarakhand. This temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Shiva. The fact that the temple is located inside a cave which is near the bank of the holy river Alaknanda is what draws the attention of many tourists and devotees. The cave of the Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is a part of the two altitudinous majestic hills which contain over 1000 naturally occurring ancient Shivalinga, and the prominent thing is that around 10-15 Shivalinga are visible while coming down to the temple.

Koteshwar Mahadev Temple has a rich mythological background. According to some legends, Lord Shiva meditated here in Koteshwar while his way to Kedarnath.

And according to some other legends, there was a demon named Bhasmasur, who attained the power from Lord Shiva of turning anyone into ashes through his touch by performing intense meditation. After receiving this vardaan from Lord Shiva, his greed took over him and he tried to destroy Lord Shiva by killing him. So, Lord Shiva in order to save himself from Bhasmasur hid in the cave of Koteshwar (which is now known as the Koteshwar Mahadev Mandir) and sought help from Lord Vishnu by meditating inside the cave. After which, Lord Vishnu saved Lord Shiva by taking the avatar of “Mohini” and killing the demon.
