Gopinath Mandir  is situated in Gopeshwar town of Chamoli district, the Temple is devoted to Lord Shiva as his trident is in the temple. Legend says that the god of love Kamadeva disturbed Lord shiva while he was meditating, angry Lord Shiva threw his trident at Kamadeva and killed him. The trident broke but it restored itself in its previous form and from that time it is there and the trident is not weathered by any of the elements. It is said that only the true devotee of Lord Shiva can move the metal trident otherwise it can not be moved even by a brute force.

Another legend says that after Lord Shiva killed the Kamadeva his wife Rati came and pleaded with Lord Shiva and inflicted self-punishment in front of Lord Shiva, as known for his big heart & forgiven nature Lord Shiva pleased by her devotion and blessed Rati that her husband will reappear.

Note: Gopinath mandir serves as a winter shrine for six months for Rudranath Temple.
