Mussoorie: The Queen of Hills

Introduction

Mussoorie is also referred to as “The Queen of Hills” of Uttarakhand and is one of the most favorite and popular tourist destinations to spend time in hills covered with lush trees and greenery scenery. Mussoorie the word came from the plant Mansur shrub that can usually be found here. Mussoorie’s beauty is incredible to describe in words and it can say it is a package of beautiful greenery valleys, lakes, resorts, some great institutions, and more.

 

History of Mussoorie

Mussoorie was found by the British officer Captain Frederick Young in the early 1820s while climbing upward to a hill from a doon valley with Mr. Shore. Later, they developed it as a summer capital for British elite classes.

Landour is 984 ft above Mussoorie and the first sanatorium was built by the Britishers in Landour in 1827. The sanatorium was a kind of hospital, patients can stay there for long period for treatment but this sanatorium was just for the British high-class people.

Later, Mussoorie became the favorite and popular spot of the Britishers for parties and any functions, but restrictions were only for the Indians.

 

Places to visit in Mussoorie

 

1. George Everest

George Everest is at a distance of 6 km from Gandhi chowk, Mussoorie. George Everest is listed as the top visited place in Mussoorie due to its cozy weather, amazing sunset view, and peaceful place. It’s perfect for camping, picnic, and trekking too. This place was named by the Surveyor of India Sir George Everest as he was the residence of this place and the area called Park Estate, still, there is a home and laboratory of Sir George constructed in 1832 which is a major attraction of tourists.

  • For snacks, you can visit Everest Cafe 400 m from George Everest House, and before the peak, it is 500 mt.

 

2. Bhatta falls

Bhatta falls is 7 Km from Mussoorie city. It is one of the major attractions of visitors or tourists due to its famous waterfall and picnic spot. Bhatta falls, is referred to as the best spot to spend time with family and friends. The circular pool and pond are perfect for enjoying bathing and swimming, and the children’s park is also over there with slope and swings facilities to play. This place is also considered as picturesque for photographers to capture its beauty of it.

  • You can get a cafeteria and good small shops over there.

 

3. Lal Tibba

Lal Tibba is known for being the highest peak in Mussoorie and is one of the famous viewpoints. Tibba means Peaks, during Sunset and sunrise this peak looks red, that is the only reason to call this place Lal Tibba. Lal Tibba is perfect for long walks under greenery forest and one can view the sight of mountains and peaks.

  • There are lots of worthy cafes to spend time in and have snacks.

 

4. The Mall Road

Mall Road is one of the famous spots of Mussoorie. The place covered with benches and lampposts makes it different and the colonial area of it reminds the art of Brtisihers architecture. The mall road was designed by the Britishers at the time British raj for long walks and to spend some peaceful time with their family. At that time only high classes British were allowed there and restrictions over Indians.

  • Visitors can do shopping, play video games at old parlors, and can take a ride on the rickshaw to explore the mall road
  • On mall road on both sides, you can try lots of small and big restaurants and cafes.

 

5. Company Garden

Company garden, at a distance around 4 km from the mall road of Mussoorie. One of the oldest gardens with well maintained, a small waterfall, and a mini nursery with pleasing flowers is the ultimate beauty of this garden.

  • Entry ticket is a must for each person which cost over 25 per person and for boating you must pay a cost of around 75 rupees.
  • Several good restaurants and cafes can easily get here.
  • Timing: 9 AM to 6 PM.

 

6. Cloud End

Cloud End, is one of the major attractions as its Natural beauty wrapped this area that felt no less than heaven covered with deodar, oak trees, and a cloud was just seen near us that creates scenery for visitors. It’s 7 Km from Mussoorie city.

  • The entry fee per person is 50 rupees.
  • No worry about stay points and resort, at best you can get there.

 

7. Kempty Fall

Kempty fall the famous fall of Mussoorie, one can never deny visiting this place that is full of fun and another worth place too to visit. In the 1830s, a British officer developed this site to spend their summertime, and later, they made it a tourist place. Now, it’s known as the best picnic spot. Kempty fall is 13 km from Mussoorie.

  • Entry is free but for ropeway, locker, and parking charges are marked.
  • Timings: 8 AM to 5 PM

 

8. Gun Hill

Gun Hill is the second-highest peak of Mussoorie. From a gun hill, visitors can take a view of the Himalayan ranges like Pithwara, Srikantha, Gangotri group, etc. Gun hill takes 20 min trek uphill from Mall Road. It offers a ropeway ride to Gun hill which provides a wonderful view of the valley.

  • 75 rupees charged for a ropeway ride.
  • Timings: 10 AM to 6 PM.

 

9. Mussoorie Lake

Mussoorie lake is the latest picnic spot for families and couples. It is perfect for children too to engage in activities like boating, zip lining, and more. This lake offers a great location and facilities to spend some time from the busy schedule for pleasure. Mussoorie lake is 6 km from the main Mussoorie at Dhobi Ghat.

  • The entry fee is 15 rupees and 350 rupees for boating and zip lining.
  • Timing: 9 AM to 6 PM.

 

10. Camel’s Back Road

Camel’s back road is a 3 km long road that is situated in the Mussoorie’s heart and provides a calm and peaceful nature. Camelback road named got due to the rock which is a natural layout in the shape of a camel hump at end of the road.

  • No entry fee is required.

 

How to reach Mussoorie

Mussoorie which is about 32 km from Dehradun takes time around 1 hour and 25 minutes to reach. People who are outsiders must reach first Dehradun to visit Mussoorie.

By Road

From Dehradun, you can easily get buses, cabs, and rental vehicles to reach Mussoorie. One can take the bus to reach Mussoorie from ISBT Dehradun.

By Train

Visitors can visit Dehradun by train. You can take a train to Haridwar and Dehradun and after reaching the railway stations of Dehradun you can take the bus from the bus station which is near of railway station and from Haridwar railway station one can get a taxi and can book a cab for Dehradun (ISBT). From ISBT visitors can catch the Mussoorie bus or you can directly book a cab for Mussoorie from the stations.

By Air

People across India and from across the world can easily visit Jolly Grant Airport. After reaching Jolly grant airport you can take an auto, or taxi and can book a cab for the main Dehradun. From Dehradun, you take a bus to Mussoorie from ISBT, and you go book a direct cab for Mussoorie.

 

Things to remember before visiting Mussoorie

If you are visiting Mussoorie in summer still kept warm clothes with you because the climate here keeps changing and after evening, you see the temperature down.
