Mussoorie is a hill station and a municipal board near the city of Dehradun in the Dehradun district of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is approximately 35 kilometers (22 mi) from the state capital Dehradun and 290 km (180 mi) north of the national capital New Delhi. The hill station is at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayan ranges. The adjoining town of Landour, which includes a military cantonment, is considered part of “Greater Mussoorie”, as are the townships of Barloganj and Jharipani.
Mussoorie is at an average elevation of 2,005 meters (6,578 ft). In the northeast are the Himalayan snow ranges, and in the south are the Doon valley and Shivalik ranges. The second highest point is Mool Lal Tibba at Landour, which has an elevation of 2,275 m (7,464 ft). Mussoorie is popularly known as the Queen of Hills.
Mussoorie has long been known as the queen of hills. The name Mussoorie is often attributed to the etymology of Mansoor, a shrub that is indigenous to the region. The city is often called Mansoori by Indians.
In 1803, the Gorkhas under the leadership of Umar Singh Thapa conquered Garhwal and Dehra, leading to the establishment of Mussoorie. War broke out between the Gurkhas and the British on 1 November 1814. Dehradun and Mussoorie were vacated by the Gorkhas by the year 1815 and were merged into Saharanpur district by 1819.
Tourism, concentrated during summer and winter, is the most important segment of Mussoorie’s economy.
