About Har ki Doon  

Har ki Doon is cradled-shaped hanging dale, deposited in the western Ganges of the Garhwal Himalayas in the Uttarkashi quarter of Uttarakhand. Har ki Doon is located at an altitude of 11800 ft (3566 mt). The place got its name through the beautiful emulsion of two-word Har meaning God and Dun meaning Valley therefore, also known as the valley of gods. The valley is surrounded by thick timbers of orchids, pines, and deodars. The snow-covered mountains enhance the beauty of the valley. 

Har ki Doon falls in the area of Govind Pashu Vihar wildlife sanctuary one can see several wild animals there. This place is rich in wildlife and a paradise for nature lovers. Activities like bird viewing, village tourism, and trekking can be done here. From taluka to Har ki Doon peak you will see a number of villages. The locals highly depend on agriculture and tourism for their survival.  

History of Har ki Doon  

Har ki Doon has a lot of Mahabharat times references. According to History, it is said that during the exile of the Pandavas, when Duryodhana was tuning in to them, he reached the Jaunsar region of Garhwal. Duryodhana liked this place very much and he requested the regional god Mahsu to give him a part of the valley where he rules and takes care of the people. There used to be a small kingdom of Duryodhana in the Saud gaon. The people of Saud gaon built a temple for Duryodhana. Even today, in the month of Asad (June & July), the idol of Duryodhana is brought in doli from Jakhol village to Osla village. During Mahabharata times ancestors of these villages fought the war against the mighty Kauravas.

Har ki Doon is a base for Swargarohini peak which is situated at an altitude of 21000 ft. The place derived its name from the legends associated with it from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Some stories say that this is the place from where Yudhisthir and his dog climbed the stairs to heaven. But many people claim that the Pandavas had taken a route from the Badrinath and climbed the Swargarohini glacier to the top and not the Swargarohini peak.  

Weather and Temperature of Har ki Doon  

Har ki Doon offers an abundance of flora and fauna in the valley. During different seasons Har ki Dun offers a whole different plethora of colors and geographies. The weather condition of the valley varies from month to month.  

  • In summer chances of rainfall significantly drop. The average temperature of the Har ki doon valley in April and May ranges between 14 °C to 22 °C. During this time the snow starts to melt and the frozen water springs also become like before.  
  • In Monsoon it begins to rain more frequently in the valley. In July & August, the drop in the temperature makes the Har ki doon valley colder. During this time the valley witnessed greenery and a variety of flowers.  
  • In Autumn the sun again begins to shine with clear skies. The average temperature during this season ranges between 12 °C to 18 °C. Although the Har ki doon valley won’t witness heavy rainfall there are chances of rain showers.  
  • In winter the snow-covered mountains create panoramic views of the valley. The months of December & January is considered the coldest month of the year. During this time the Har ki doon valley witnesses its first snowfall and the temperature also goes in negative.  

How to reach Har ki Doon  

To reach Har ki doon, one has to first reach the village of Sankri which is 200 km away from Dehradun. From Sankri one has to travel 10 km to reach Taluka. The 10 km patch from sankri to taluka is very eventful as you will experience off-roading. From taluka, the adventurous trek starts. Dehradun is a well-developed smart city that is connected by road, railways, and flights.   

BY ROAD  

The road is the only mode of communication to reach Sankri from Dehradun. You can complete your journey to Sankri by bus or car. You can get private buses from Gandhi Road (near the Railway station) at regular intervals from 5:30 am. You can get government buses from Mussoorie roadways bus station at regular intervals from 8:00 am. The whole journey between Dehradun to Sankri will take 10-11 hours.    

By Railway  

Dehradun is a well-developed smart city and is connected with various major Indian cities. We suggest you take the night train from Delhi as you will reach Dehradun early in the morning and thus you can explore the local market of Dehradun and then you can take a cab or bus for the Sankri.   

By Air
