Lord Vishnu and his Avtars

Lord Vishnu is one of the most worshipped gods in the Hindu religion. Along with Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma, He is part of the Trimurti concept of Hinduism. Lord Vishnu is the savior and the protector of the universe

Lord Vishnu Incarnations(Avtar) and Swaroop

Lord Vishnu has been worshipped for over 2000 years as the supreme protector of Hindu mythology, along with Shiva and Brahmin. Whenever humanity has been in danger by evils, Lord Vishnu took birth on the earth in his various avatars or incarnations, to revamp humanity on the right path. Here we will get to know some of the major Avtar of Lord Vishnu.

1. Matsya, the Fish

Matsya was Lord Vishnu’s 1st avatar. In this form, Vishnu can be seen as a fish, who shows himself to be the first man, Manu. He warns Manu about a great flood that will come in 7 days and which will destroy all life. Then, he guided Manu to preserve medicinal herbs, seeds, seven saints, and all other major things as mentioned in Vishnu Puranas, to take shelter in a boat built by the Devas; in order to protect them.

2. Kurma, the Tortoise

According to the legend of the churning of the ocean, the Devas (Gods) and Asuras (Demons) tied hands to stir the mundane ocean. Believing, that this would release gifts that had been hidden at the bottom of the ocean; which also includes Amrit, the ambrosia of immortality.

As they start stirring the ocean, the mountain begins to sink. Vishnu appears as a tortoise and supports the mountain on his back.

3. Varaha, the Boar

Varaha is one of the main Vishnu avatars and has many dedicated temples.

According to the Puranas, the evil, Hiranyaksha, pulled the earth to the depths of the ocean. Here, Vishnu appears as a wild boar, to bring the earth back to its level.

4. Narasimha, the Lion-Man

Vishnu’s popular avtar into his Narasimha avatar is widely known through the old TV shows. In this avtar Lord Vishnu can be seen partially lion and another part as a man in order to do battle with the Asura, Hiranyakashyap.

5. Vamana, the Dwarf

With the reference to Rig Veda, the story of the Asura, Bali, who performs penance to Brahmins (the Priest class). He gains unpredictable power which he uses to take control of the whole universe. The Devas (from Devlok) came to Vishnu for urgent help, who took incarnation as Vamana, the dwarf.
