History of Laxmi Narayan Temple, Delhi

It is Also known as the Birla Temple; this majestic monument was built by the famous industrialist Birla family. BD Birla, together with his son Jugal Kishore Birla, began construction of the temple in 1933. The foundation stone for this famous temple was laid by Maharaj Udaybhanu Singh. Pandit Vishwanath Shastri was the guide during the construction of the temple.

After the construction was completed, the closing ceremony and the Yagna were performed by Swami Keshav Nandji. Mahatma Gandhi is credited with inaugurating the temple with a unique condition that entry into the temple will not be defined by the caste of the worshipers. He stressed that worshipers of all castes should be allowed to pray in the temple, whether it is a brahmin or a shudra. The main tabernacle houses the statues of Narayan and Laxmi.

There are other small sanctuaries devoted to ShivaGanesha, and Hanuman. There’s also a sanctum devoted to Buddha. The tabernacle on the left side Shikhar (pate) houses Devi Durga, the goddess of Shakti, power. The tabernacle covers an area of roughly7.5 acres (m2) and the erected-up area is0.52 acres (m2).
