History of Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Dehradun
Tapkeshwar Mandir Dehradun is famous because of the presence of Shiva Linga in a cave. In previous times rivers used to flow through these caves and the water droplets were continuously fell over the Shiva Linga that’s why this place has become the holy place for the local people. It is also believed that the Guru Dronacharya who was the mentor for Kauravas and Pandavas has used this place as a residence. When guru Dronacharya’s wife Kalyani gave birth to his child named Ashwatthama they both could not afford the milk for Ashwatthama, as being a smart child Ashwatthama prayed to Lord Shiva and after hearing the child’s prayer Lord Shiva helped him and fed the milk by dripping it from Shiva Linga in the cave, hence this cave is called the Drona Cave.
Tapkeshwar Mahadev Mandir is popular because of its beautiful site as it is situated between two hills and the Shiva Linga in the Drona cave the drops are falling over it and vanishing in the ground and can be seen by a few distances away as a stream attracts the travelers and there is a cool Sulphur water spring in the temple where the pilgrims can take bath before entering the temple. A large fair is organized every year on the auspicious occasion of Shivratri the city people come and enjoy and also pay their obeisance to Lord Shiva.
