The Legends of Mahakaleshwar

Mahakaleshwar, which means “Lord of Time,” refers to Lord Shiva, one of the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Maheshwara, with Lord Shiva also known as Maheshwara. This temple is dedicated to Mahakal, Lord Shiva, and is also known as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.

According to tradition, Sati, Lord Shiva’s wife, stepped into the flames to protest her father, Daksha, who was opposed to her marriage with Shiva. This enraged Lord Shiva, prompting him to execute the Tandav, or Death Dance, for which he became known as the Mahakal, or the one who is mightier and ahead of time itself.

According to another mythology, the demon Dushan attacked our Shaiva bhakts, and in a fit of fury, Lord Shiva tore the earth in half, manifesting as Mahakaleshwar.

2.The male should wear gents dhoti and no cloth on upper part of body.The women should wear Indian saree

Treval tip:

  1. Do not attempt to visit on your own four-wheeler. The temple pathways are also somewhat narrow and crowded.
  2. The male should wear a gents dhoti and no clothing on his upper body. Women should dress in Indian sarees.
  3. Expect to walk a lot. Parking is far from the temple. Even the pick-up and drop-off site for leased vehicles inside the temple premises is a bit far, and you have to go a long way inside before reaching the main shrine.
  4. Once inside, no one is permitted to approach the shivlinga. Only the temple priest can accept your donations.
  5. Gadgets, leather goods, or similar items are not permitted inside. The temple’s website contains more information.
  6. Try to take the left-side queue inside the temple because it will give you a better view of the shivlinga when you get to the main courtyard. The right-side queue has a wonderful view of the altar, but they cannot make direct donations to the priest.
