Gopeshwar, also known as the administrative headquarter of chamoli district is located in garhwal region of uttarakhand at the height of 1550m above sea level. As being on the route to badrinath dham, Gopeshwar is mostly famous for temples, weather and its scenic beauty. It also has a kund name vaitrani.

History of gopeshwar

It is believed that the name gopeshwar is derived from lord Krishna.

Initially gopeshwar was held by several dynasties before being the part of garhwal kingdom.  Later it was held by gurkhas, who lost it to britisher, in the anglo-nepalese war of 1814-1816.

Being in route to badrinath dham it is also a most visited tourist place for pilgrims. Some other places to visit are:

Gopinath temple:- gopinath temple of  uttarakhand is dedicated to lord shiva. The archietecture of this temple resembles to other shiva temples like tungnath, kedarnath, rudranath etc. according to some mythology it is believed that the trident(trishul) which is present here was used by lord shiva to kill kamdeva(god of love) when he tried to disturbed lord shiva during meditation. And it is said that the trishul cannot be moved by full force but  a true devotee can shake the trishul with his small finger.

Anusuya devi & atri muni temple:- located around 14km away from gopeshwar, this temple is dedicated to goddess sati, who was the wife of sage atri muni(one among saptrisis). It is said she was fully dedicated to her husband. Every year a large fair takes place on the occasion of duttatreya jayanti in December.

Chandika devi temple:- this temple is also called maa mahishashur mardini as at this place mahisashur was killed by chandika devi. It is located 2kms away from gopeshwar.

Nearest airport:- jolly grant airport Dehradun, 226kms

Nearest railway station:- rishikesh ,206 kms

By bus: one can travel by bus from Dehradun(272kms) or from rishikesh(208kms)
