Introduction of Bhadraj temple
Bhadraj temple is one of the prestigious temples in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand which was established after the Mahabharata war in the Dwapur yug. This temple indicates Lord Balram as also called Halayudha, Baladeva, Haladhara, Balabhadra, and Sankarshana, and the elder brother of Lord Krishna.

Bhadraj temple also referred to as a part of Badrinath temple that is of Balram, it’s believed that devotees get the same blessings here as get in Badrinath temple. Bhadraj temple, by the time and grace of God it’s beautifully reconstructed into white marble earlier, it was of wood. White marble enhances this temple a lot as it shows the purity sign.
Devotees have been offering ghee, butter, and milk from years to Lord Balram. It’s the only prasad which offers due to its treasure and favorites of Lord Balram. Lord Balram’s idol is cleansed with milk.
Mythology and History of Bhadraj temple
Bhadraj temple was constructed by the local villagers of Matogi village, Binhar but why it was situated takes us back to the story. After the war of Mahabharata, Lord Balram left his kingdom and went for expiation. On the way, he reached that place where people’s affection towards their cattle attracts Balram and he started doing meditation there, in a moment Balram got along with everyone. When finally, the time came to leave that place after spending years with villagers, people request a lot to not leave them while seeing their respect and love towards him, Balram promised that he’ll come back in the form statue and would take care of everyone and their cattle.
After years, Nandu Mehra the villager was on his way when he hears a voice requesting to take him out from the ground for a time he panics but somehow, he digs and found Balram’s statue. Again, the voice mentioned Nandu to take this statue to the top of the hill and placed it where it feels heavy to you while carrying it. In the starting statue was light as he takes upwards to the top hill the statue become heavy, so he placed it at that place and today it’s known as Bhadraj Temple.
About Bhadraj Idol
Once, a British officer visited a village and asked for milk, but people deny offering him as it was a time of worship, and the first stone idol of Lord Balram is cleansed with milk. He flares up and destroyed the statue and from then Bhadraj’s idol hand is fragmented. After this, the British family suffered a lot. Officer and his two children died, and then the British officer’s wife realized his husband’s mistake and came over here for remorse.

Every year a great grand fair (Mela) is organized between the 15th to 17th of August by the Bhadraj temple committee. A large crowd of devotees is seen at the fair. It bounds people with the culture so that more people can connect. It gives relief from the daily busy life.

Mussoorie from Dehradun city is 15km and From Mussoorie, you can take the cloud end route which is 11 km to Bhadraj temple.
How to reach Bhadraj Temple
To reach Bhadraj Temple you can opt for trekking or by vehicle. From the cloud end, Bhadraj temple can be reached at 11 km including 3km to Dudhli village which is described as a milkman’s trail, and from Dudhli it took 8km to Bhadraj Temple.
You can stay at Dudhli village by setting your camp to spend more time at the mysterious village and to feel the environment of that area.

You can catch the train from Haridwar station or Dehradun station after reaching Haridwar station you can get public transport to Dehradun and from Dehradun, you can get a taxi, bus, and cab to reach Mussoorie.
Best Time to visit
May to August is best to visit as it shows the true beauty of nature and connects more with the colors of nature. It’s already cold so visiting in winter can be a bit difficult due to snowfall and in monsoon due to heavy rain, there is the chance of landslides, and may become harder to reach.
The best time is from 5 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 9 pm.
Things to remember before going to Bhadraj Temple
- Try to avoid going on four wheels, way as according to trekking and by four wheels you can face difficulties.
- Never enter the temple after non-veg consumption. Also, this consumption is not allowed in that area.
- The monsoon keeps changing so if you visit in the summer season still have woolen clothes and an umbrella.
- While trekking, carry your food and water because barely you will get to shop there.
- Try not to do garbage it harms the nature and environment. Take your garbage with you.
