Nanda Devi is the second highest mountains peak in India after Kanchenjunga

Location

The Mountain is Location in the northern state of uttarakhand, and is part of the Garhwal Himalayas. 

First ascent

The mountain was first climbed in 1936 by a British expedition led by Bill Tilman and Noel Odell.

Heritage site

In 1988, the Nanda Devi and Valley of Flower National Parks were declared a UNESCO world Heritage Site.

In 1965, US CIA and Indian climbers tried to install a nuclear monitoring device on Nanda Devi for Cold War spying. It went missing and has never been found.

Mountaineering and adventure- based activities inside Nanda Devi National Park have been banned since 1983. Nanda Devi East Base Camp trek is the closest one can reach.
